Ty Gwyn is situated
in the North of the North Island of New Zealand, on
fertile, rolling country, just two hours drive from
New Zealand's largest city, Auckland and 10 minutes
from the world reknowned game fishing experience that
is Tutukaka. We have the best of both worlds. Ten
minutes drive from the city of Whangarei or 10 minutes
the other way to a selection of golden beaches.
Established in 1974 to breed quality
performance ponies, with looks, ability and temperament,
our ponies are bred from generations of proven performance
mares using imported stallions. We follow the lines
of Coed Coch, Downland blood. All our ponies are registered
with the Welsh Pony & Cob Society of New Zealand
and some with the Pony Breeders Society of New Zealand.

The Stud's foundation mare was an
Anglo Arab park hack Mill Valley Arab (Grey Swirl
x Pammette) TB. Her first welsh foal was Ty Gwyn Forest
Lake who was by the imported Forestland Robin (Criban
Victor [the first section B to come to Australasia]
x Cwmnantgwyn Primula). He became the stud's first
stallion. He was crossed over riding pony mares along
with welsh part breds and produced many successful
ponies who excelled in all disciplines. They included
Ty Gwyn Trinity, Forest Pride, Forrester and his most
successful daughter - Ty Gwyn Solitaire who won the
Welsh National Performance Competition a record four
times! Three on successive occasions. Her achievement
was recognised when she was awarded the Priscilla
Neil Trophy for excellence. Another of his offspring
was sold to Japan as a show jumper. Forest Lake was
later gelded and became a very successful pony in
his own right, representing his area at Timberlands
& Cambridge Show Jumping Championships as well
as being a successful show pony.
Our first Welsh mares were partbreds
Evermore Miss Beauty (Chawton Glyndwr x Miss Burradoo),
a lovely little black mare and Sheralee (Chawton Glyndwr
x La Petite TB). Our first Welsh Section B was the
highly successful Glynmawr Fragrance. Fay was a true
type B. Full 13/2 with a glorious welsh head and a
beautiful action. She was very successful in hand
and under saddle and excelled in dressage. She was
also a nifty little jumping pony. We have retained
three of her daughters - all by imported section B
stallions.
Dianne has been on the Council of
the Welsh Pony & Cob Society of New Zealand for
a number of years. She is a judge of saddle hacks and ponies and also
most breed societies.
Shannon, like her Mother, has also
been a rider and is now interested in the breeding
side of the sport. Shannon is the present Convenor of the Welsh In Hand Trophy and a councillor for the Welsh Pony & Cob Society of New Zealand.

ATTITUDE
TO BREEDING |
Our aim
is to breed ponies that are all rounders.
That have the attitude and the will to perform
without losing their individual spontaneity.
To help with that purpose,
we imported Mithril Glenfiddich from Australia
in 1996. He is full height at 13/2 and is
jet black in colour. He is by Owendale Brandyman
x Hazelmere Rosanna. He goes straight back
to Croston Cufflink and Sir Percy of Paxhall,
both of whom need little introduction, being
the prolific sires of saddle ponies.
His first progeny have been
backed. It has been found that they are extremely
intelligent, quick learners, very eager to
please and love to perform.
